Dear Readers

Marilyn

Welcome to this issue of Natural News and I hope you are enjoying the summer months. I have included an article in this issue on having a healthy summer because when we’re outside much more, and having food that may be sitting in hot weather, we need to take a few precautions to keep ourselves well.

Also there are two articles on hygiene, which on first sight may seem a little contradictory – it’s important to keep areas of our environment clean but there are also problems if we’re too hygienic. It’s getting the balance that is important.

Research has shown that children brought up on farms and those in families with older siblings are less susceptible to allergies. It is thought that the more exposure the body gets to naturally occurring substances, the stronger it becomes in coping with allergens.

I would suggest that you follow the tips on healthy hygiene, but don’t go overboard on all these antibacterial sprays and other chemically laden cleaners and detergents as the more natural ones do the trick just as well.

There is also a lovely recipe for roasted peppers, which can be served either hot or cold so ideal for summer dining.

Kind regards

Letter from Marilyn (June 2009)

Dear Readers

Marilyn

There are two articles on pain relief in this issue of Natural News: one on general pain relief for arthritis, back pain and headaches, and another one specifically on help with period pains. It is so important to look at natural ways to relieve pain, because it is becoming more well-known that painkillers can actually be causing more pain rather than relieving it.

I have seen a number of patients in the clinic whose repeated headaches are being caused by the painkillers. The longer the pills are taken, the more resistant the body becomes to their effects and so the person needs to take more or even has to have a stronger painkiller. As the medication wears off there is a withdrawal effect, known as a ‘rebound’ headache, which means that more painkillers need to be taken and so that person is stuck in a vicious circle.

For those of you who are suffering with hay fever I hope you find the article on this subject helpful in reducing the symptoms.

Do let me know if there are any topics you would particularly like me to cover – and remember to send in your favourite recipes and keep your questions coming!

Kind regards

Letter from Marilyn (May 2009)

Dear Readers

Marilyn

We are now into the month of May and as my mother used to say ‘don’t cast a clout until May is out’, but hopefully we will have some warm days this month and be able to take off a few layers of clothing.

This issue of Natural News is packed with many interesting articles, which I hope you will enjoy.  Particularly the one entitled ‘Feeding your Face’, as I firmly believe that beauty starts from within and that what we feed ourselves can help slow down the ageing process – or speed it up – depending on how we eat.

The Star Question continues from last month looking at how we can control cholesterol with diet etc. Evidence is emerging that it is just as bad to have too low cholesterol levels as it is to have them too high, and statins can cause extremely low levels of cholesterol. It is also one of those drugs that once you start them you are likely to be on them for the rest of your life, so if you can use nutrition to bring your cholesterol down to a healthy level then this is going to be better for you in the long term and you are not risking the side effects of a drug.

Kind regards
